Equatorial Guinea, a small country in West Africa, is haven to beach lovers. This former Spanish colony consists of the mainland and the islands, bordered by Cameroon and Gabon.

The country is notorious for corrupt practices in government, bribery, botched coups — attracting crime writers and mercenaries alike. Poverty is nowhere near more obvious than in Malabo, where flames of oil rigs will make you think you have reached hell on earth.

Beyond these harsh realities, Equatorial Guinea has some innate beauty to offer to visitors. Take delight in volcanic views, visit fishing villages, make a trip to rain forests full of endangered primates, or explore the shores that nestle sea turtles. This is what the islands have to offer. On the mainland, beach lovers can find haven in pristine white sand resorts.
